Bromo is an active cone inside the much larger Tengger caldera in east Java, surrounded by a flat sea of volcanic sand. The standard visit is a pre-dawn jeep ride to a viewpoint on the caldera rim, then a walk and stair climb to the smoking crater. Nights at 2,000 metres are genuinely cold, which surprises most first-time visitors.
